MÖTE MED KOREOGRAF

As a dancer as well as a choreographer I work with different expressions, methods and techniques. There is no hierarchy between traditions and techniques. However, the foundation and what I always return to is my release-training as well as writing.

There is a trust in the fact that the movement or the task in its simplest form is enough. In my work, the dancer is aware of, but is rarely busy with, the image they are producing. I encourage you to free yourself from the pressure of being creative and the pressure of constantly moving forward. These things might happen anyways. I am interested in a type of creativity that arises from feelings of safety and security, from calmness and being grounded.

-    Be with the doing. 
-    Have the courage to stay rather than move on. 
-    There is plenty of complexity in simplicity. 

 

The content and the structure of this workshop depends on the participants and might shift throughout the week. Emphasis will be on doing, dancing, sweating and verbally sharing our experiences. Bring paper and a pen (or phone/anything to write with/on)! 

We begin with moving between set exercises and improvisational tasks, meant to strengthen and warm up the body as well as activate an awareness of space and time. Informed by this training we will also engage in choreographic material from my previous pieces as well as try out new, possible, tasks for future works. This might include the breath and voice. 

 
Marcus Baldemar, originally from Kiruna, is a dancer and choreographer now based in Stockholm, Sweden. 

For the majority of his professional life he lived in Brussels, Belgium where he was educated at P.A.R.T.S. Before that he attended Balettakademien in Umeå as well as SEAD in Salzburg, Austria. Since graduating in 2008 Marcus has been working as a dancer, choreographer and teacher internationally while staying connected to the Swedish dance scene. As a performer he has worked with Hagar Malin Hellkvist Sellén, Ludvig Daae, David Zambrano, Rui Horta and Daniel Linehan, amongst others. Marcus was also part in the making and performing of Swedish electro-pop duo The Knife’s Shaking the Habitual-The Show. The process was led by Swedish choreographer Stina Nyberg.

 

As choreographer he has made several pieces for adults as well as children. A selection: Love Shrine & Your Majesty - Part 1 (2016), GALDR (2019), Polari Speaking Sex (2021), Markus Lär Sig Finska (2021) and Finally Fantastic (2022). 

 

“Mitt arbete vill kommunicera en icke-hierarki mellan det känslomässiga, fysiska och intellektuella. Ett av mina intressen ligger i att hitta/skapa samband mellan den poetiska/politiska kroppen och ett poetiskt/politiskt språk. Detta som en öppen, föränderlig, fråga som följer mig i arbetet. Författaren L Feinberg sa en gång gender is the poetry we make of the language we are taught. I mitt arbete ser jag även rörelse och kropp som poesin vi skapar av det språk vi lär oss. Jag arbetar ofta med text men kroppen är den huvudsakliga kommunikatören. 

Jag tar ofta avstamp i queer historia och historieberättande samt i ambitionen att queera historia och historieberättande. I solot GALDR tittade jag på nordisk mytologi med en queer blick och dansade en alternativ historia baserad på Oden. Med verket Polari Speaking Sex inspirerades jag av ett hemligt språk, Polari, som talades bland homosexuella i England från början av 1900-talet fram till 60-talet. Tillsammans med mina medarbetare undersökte vi idén om en hemlig kommunikation som möjliggör att i säkerhet dela och leva ut queer glädje, njutning och intimitet i offentligheten. Samma år skapade jag tillsammans med Eliisa Erävalo min första föreställning för barn. Verket är tvåspråkigt (finska och svenska) och heter Markus Lär Sig Finska. I verket Finally Fantastic (2022) skildras ett tillsammansskap ända in i döden. Hur döendet samexisterar med det fantasifulla, glädjerika och intima. Verket kan ses som en mötesplats och en gemensam gravplats där en samling personer av olika generationer gör, dör och är tillsammans. Precis som i tidigare verk tog jag avstamp i historien och skapade ett verk som talar till nuet. Vi dör en död vi önskar dö, tillsammans!”
