MASTER CLASS- Oona Doherty rep.

In this workshop you will dive into the work and practises of Oona Doherty, specific to her creation ‘Navy Blue’, through the experience of performer Joseph Simon.

In the first part of the workshop, we will warm up together and learn repertoire from the first half of the piece, which can be described as a type of contemporary ballet infused with dread. Then, we will move through a range of practises of improvisation and guided physical states, used during the creation process as well as on stage by the performers to feed the third section of the piece. This will include some clowning work as well as physical states of falling and receiving impulses ( ‘strings’ ) from the cosmos. We will conclude the workshop with a longer session, in which the participants will have time to dwell in this state and dive deeper into everything we touched on.

 

Joseph Simon is a freelance dance artist based in Rotterdam (NL). He found his way into dance through Breaking and HipHop culture and graduated ArtEZ School of Contemporary Dance, Arnhem (NL) in 2014. He works internationally as a performer, teacher, choreographer and collaborator. Joseph worked with choreographers as Erik Kaiel, Hooman Sharifi, Alida Dors, Jochen Heckmann, Jean-Guillaume Weis, Eric Trottier, Christina Liakopoyloy, Jonas Frey, Dalton Jansen and currently tours with Oona Doherty in ‘Navy Blue’.

With the support of Dansateliers Rotterdam, he created and toured several works, centring around bridging dance cultures and questions of identity. In the past years, he has been a regular guest teacher at Codarts Circus Arts University and also teaching and making work at different dance universities across Europe.
